87 Ma May House is one of the 14 ancient houses in Hanoi, which were built around the end of the nineteenth century. The total area of the house is 157.6m2, it was constructed a perpendicular to the street, the length of the land is 28m, the width of the front 5m and the width of the rear is 6m.

The house has changed owners many times. In 1945, a northern drug dealer bought the house. From 1954 to 1999, there were 5 families living there.

The house was restored in late 1998, completed on October 27, 1999, under the cooperation between Hanoi City and Toulouse City (France). All structures of architecture, building materials (wood) to stuff in the house are kept the same as they were before. On February 16, 2004, the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism) signed the decision to recognize the ancient house no.87 in Ma May as a National Heritage.

 

 

Today, the house becomes an information point, introducing people and visitors to the house of the Vietnamese people in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. Visitors coming to the house will get a better understanding of the lifestyle and activities of the old Hanoi.

The house is not wide but very deep. The street side is a shop, not a wall, but open to the street to display goods. Inside there is a loose yard. Next to the backyard is the warehouse and kitchen.

The second floor is the space for the altar and the bedroom. In the middle of the house, there is a small garden, creating a natural environment.

Walk from Hoan Kiem Lake

 

You can walk across Hoan Kiem Lake, right Go Cau Go street and then Hang Be street, turn left onto Hang Ma street, and turn right on Ma May street, take steps to 87 Ma May house.

 

Arrive by bus

 

There will be 2 parking spots near Ma May street at no.54 Nguyen Huu Huan (bus number: 04, 08, 11, 14, 18, 23) and no.3 Hang Muoi (04, 08, 11, 14, 18, 31, 34, 36, 40). You should not choose the route 23 because it takes a lot of time to get round to pick up guests in the small streets in Hanoi.

Ancient houses are opened daily. Opening hours of the 87 Ma May from 8h00 to 20h00, ticket price: 5,000 – 10,000 VND / turn. Please note lunch the house closed in the afternoon for lunch from 12h00 to 13h30.
